A powerful, deeply dimensional (7" H x 5 3/4" W x 4" D) Baroque architectural element, masterfully hand-carved from a single block of dense hardwood, likely walnut. This expressive anthropomorphic lion mask features fiercely stylized, deep-set eyes, an overhanging brow, and an open, grimacing mouth rooted in late 17th- and early 18th-century Mannerist and Baroque traditions.

The carving exhibits superb hand-tooling with subtle asymmetries, deep undercutting, and fluid, bold striations throughout the mane. Historically employed in grand European architecture to ward off evil spirits, it retains an intact, rich, dark brown patina with natural ambient oxidation in its deep recesses. A magnificent, early example of sculptural salvage with commanding display presence.
